overview

This product design project involved an iterative and comprehensive approach conducted in-house with a dedicated team. Initially engaging an external design resource, the team swiftly transitioned to delivering full-service design support internally to ensure optimal quality. The Minimum Viable Product (MVP) developed was a genuine MVP, strategically planned for consumer learning, data, and feedback to enhance future iterations. This project embodies the dynamic approach my team embraces, from challenges and confusion to adoption and design mastery, we leveraged our team's skills and specialists to deliver on-time and in scope.

My ROLE

This role entailed leading a team to define and implement strategy, vision, and user experience for a mobile app project. I collaborated with cross-disciplinary leaders and focused on advocating for customer-centric design thinking while ensuring alignment with the business's goals and objectives. Additionally, I coached team members and ran design brainstorm sessions to elevate mobile app design quality and foster continuous improvement and collaboration.

My team's Role

The team consisted of a Design Lead, and two to three designers and researchers. The initial scope was to support from a part-time capacity as subject matter experts. Once the shift was made to a full-service team, the group was folded into the delivery and product teams and began the agile delivery process starting with User Stories, Personas, and Research, but quickly hopped into delivering wireframes, user testing results, and high fidelity mocks/prototypes to hit deadlines.

the nitty gritty

Project details

Business objective

Be the first single-family rental company to have an app in the App Store.

Timeframe

6 months (from concept to live in App Store)

The stakeholders

CIO, VP and Director of Product, Director of Engineering, VP of Operations, VP of Marketing, Director of Customer Service, VP of Data and Analytics, Head of Product Design.

UX approach & strategy

Since there was no industry standard and the team was in uncharted territory, the team's strategy was to lean heavily on related industry leaders, consumer research, and data.

Considerations

Being the first, we knew we were going to make mistakes. We also knew that this MVP was the first step and not the final solution - so taking a "be best-in-class but learn as you go" approach was pivotal.

Constraints

This was a true MVP - meant to be a lean, mean, agile machine. Design enhancements that were pitched needed to be validated before the scope or timelines would be extended.

Challenges

Design was at capacity at many points, and development was challenged to hit quality standards. All while stakeholders were antsy to see progress.

Outcome MVP

A home search, save, and share app on iOS with code prepped for Android fast-follow. It included light profile management tools and dashboard features to prompt return users and future resident features.

Outcome Post-MVP

Fast-follow: Android app & Self Tour

Next: Enhanced dashboard & Dark Mode

After: Identity Verification & Biometrics

After: Self Tour Live Activity

Branded design materials

A video is worth 100,000 words...The Design team was not just responsible for the design of the product itself, but promotional materials to be circulated internally and externally.
